GDX files for real-time dispatch and pricing

A GDX file is an input data file to be used with the vSPD  model.

GDX files are created from selected SPD inputs extracted from an SPD case file.  The naming convention for the GDX files published here is CaseType_YYYYMMDDHHMM_CaseID_RunDateTime.gdx where:

  • CaseType denotes the case type, e.g. RTD, PRSS, etc,
  • YYYYMMDDHHMM denotes the start date and time of the 5-minute interval within a trading period on a date in which the underlying SPD case file was generated,
  • CaseID denotes the unique identifier for an SPD case (Case IDs are always 17 or 18 digits), and
  • RunDateTime denotes the date and time at which the SPD case was generated.

Real-time operation of the system is managed using the real-time dispatch (RTD) instance of SPD. Besides giving rise to the dispatch instructions issued to generators, RTD SPD cases also yield dispatch energy and reserve prices.

RTDP (RTD for pricing) case files may sometimes be published if scarcity pricing is in play. Likewise, PRSS (short price-responsive schedule) case files will be published if RTD cases are unavailable for any reason. When this occurs, dispatch prices for a trading period are derived from the most recent PRSS case pertaining to that period.

When a GDX file is used to provide the inputs to the vSPD model, the solution from the vSPD run will replicate that of SPD. SPD inputs and outputs are packaged up in the corresponding case file.

What are datasets?

Datasets are collections of files that often contain large volumes of data and are available for immediate download. Dataset users are typically analysts familiar with the electricity industry and have a need to obtain a large set of data or specific data on a regular basis.
