The first stage was to move the date-ordered file names into one directory, there being no utility in having them grouped and ordered by month name. Although UltimateZip does not offer a DOS interface whereby one might use the "for" command to unzip a horde, via the 'select' feature of wunduhs explorer, it can be presented with a horde of names to unzip, a saving on one-at-a-time. The files offers20040101.csv.z and offers20040101.csv.gz, when unzipped, produced the same result, so file offers20040101.csv.gz was declared surplus to requirements and deleted, as was its product, file offersgz20040101.csv with favour going to file offers20040101.csv Files offers20040401.csv.gz to offersgz20040427.csv.gz produced file names starting "offersgz" whereas files offersgz20040428.csv to offersgz20040430.csv remained with the previous usage "offers" so such files were renamed to conform. Likewise with "bidsgz" to "bids". Many file names (1,342 in the first stage) ended .csv.txt: these were changed to the .csv used by 60 seeing as although they did contain text, that text constituted data fields separated by commas... As for the month name ordered collection, the first annoyance was that although the January and February .zip files proved to contain .csv files, the others contained .z files, one for each .csv file, one per day, and when they were unzipped, they were called .csv.txt, ha ha. So another mass rename to produce .csv In addition, these files were given date parts such as 01022001, so they clearly are in the ddmmyyyy form. If someone somewhere finds it useful to have all the first days of each month together (and so forth), then they have yet to come forward and dispute my preference for the yyyymmdd form: more renaming then. As for the distinction between "physical" and non-physical bids and offers, it has not been explained, so these files are further renamed to match the others. And then I see that these data are in yet another format, unexplained also and with no header. So a subdirectory "Physical (so-called)" for the nonce. Two files as received were cut short, shown by an incomplete line: bids20020828.csv.Z became bids20020828.csv.txt then bid2002m08d28.csv line 37393: TRUS,WVY0111 ,28/08/2002,48,.033,200,.004,70,.002, bids20030428.csv.Z became bids20030428.csv.txt then bid2003m04d28.csv then moved to BadData\Bids\bid2003m04d28.csv This file was truncated after line 26857: TODD,KAW0111 ,27/04/2003,24,3.4 It also has data for the 27'th, not the 28'th, and what data it has match those in Data\Bids\bid2003m04d28.csv There is no sign of data for the 28'th. Two files failed to supply all the pieces for a day for some name: bids20030514.csv.Z became bids20030514.csv.txt then bid2003m05d14.csv but MRPL.ISL0661 has only 43 values for 14/5/2003 bids20040218.csv.Z became bids20040218.csv.txt then bid2004m02d18.csv but TRUS.SVL0331 has only 17 values for 18/2/2004 Meanwhile, from CD 4 (5122IH131LH08386B1 Label EC Data) and CD5 (5122IH132LH09641B1 Label EC - May 2005)... Then it became apparent that the file for April 2004 (from CD 5) was not yet another one-off variant but instead the first of a new standard scheme, that abandoned the daily form for a monthly form. So a revision: bid2005m04d00.csv was re-instituted, with the spurious lines blanked. off2005m04d00.csv likewise. Inspired by this augmentation of regularity, and peeved by the time taken to load the 1000MB+ of the whole year's data in file bid2004m05d01-2005m03d31.csv even just to look at it, an ad-hoc prog. splattered it into its separate daily files bid20040501.csv to bid20050331.csv as per its daily heading lines and as the last such batch conforming to the daily file scheme; the monthly file scheme that followed at only ~130MB a month is not so irksome. CD6b (5122IH132LH09793B1 Label EC - June 2005) replaces the original CD6 which was rejected due to its deviant format (column re-order, new columns, appearance of $-signs...) Why there were 1044 occurrences of the data in line 363358 rather than 1045 or 1043 is no more known than why there was not just one as there should have been, nor why that line instead of others. In the unfiddled (BadData) version this repetition is complete, even of the additional and unexplained (no header, remember) bumf such as ,23097872,c, on the lines. Despite requesting these data files, it has not occurred to Brian to ask why the different format, why the repeated lines, etc. Mere existence suffices, it seems. Whatever the merit of these data, it is possibly slightly better than not having data, though it is better to have no data than wrong data, and slightly wrong data can mislead more than slightly. Anyway, for the moment, off2004m05d01-2005m03d31.csv copied from BadData and adjusted to become off2004m05d01-2005m03d31BB.csv On later processing, attention was turned to the timestamp fields, and aside from null values, it turned out that on line 16088 the format of the first timestamp (but not the second) became YYYYMMDDHHMMSS (such as "20050214100114") for 2185 records, then reverted to DD/MM/YYYY HH:MM:SS, so after extracting the records and applying the RAKE command, UltraEdit's column-editing features enabled a reordering with only the usual levels of annoyance. Then annoyance was enhanced on encountering 48240 records starting at 66515 with a similar style change, again for only the first timestamp, plus the appearance of a letter "N", sometimes "E" so that has to be passed over. Then it transpired that there are more such blocks, and some with data unrecognisable as a date, so for now such timestamps fields, if too numerous, provoke a change to ignore that timestamp field henceforth. Messing about with one file of 170MB was tiresome, so an ad-hoc programme was written to split the file into individual months. Fortunately, the date field was always in the same place, a convenience, but on the other hand, the file does not contain data in chronological order so multiple output files had to be used together. Eleven files resulted from the spray: Fragment Duplicates Timestamp field contents other than proper timestamps. Data\Offers\off2004m05d00.csv 46859 Null, YYYYMMDDHHMMSS, "N", "CT110504". Since I am messing about, I replaced texts such as ".000," and ".00," and ".0," by ",", and also ".d0," by ".d," where d is 1-9. There were millions of occurrences, and the eat time fell by ~20%. This encouraged some other edits to further abate the flab, such as removing spurious spaces, with the result that the eleven files went from 167MB to 108MB. It became apparent that yet a third format was being used for some values of the first timestamp. In file off2004m05d00.csv, data for 1/5/2004-31/5/2004 (see records 14901-16388 or nearby, depending on inserted/removed blank lines and remarks) had integral values in the timestamp field of 3475075-3511614, so with a span of 36539 for data covering 31 days, these values are presumably not a day number with any base day. Possibly, they might represent day numbers with the last three digits being a fraction of a day, except that the last three digits look like a counter as indicated by correlations with the other dates on the records and inspection of valid dates. This is only guesswork and the data suppliers do not respond to requests for explanation and the colleagues who requested these data (presumably intending to use it for something), can't be bothered to press the issue. And yet another format appears: ",Jan001900," starting on line 27460, that probably represents a not-a-date. These were converted to a null field. There were 61,979 occurrences across the eleven files. As it happens, the data reading procedure abandons attempts to read this field if there are too many occurrences of uninterpretable dates, so if there are any occurences of the second sort of timestamp variation beyond this, and there were, vexation was enhanced. Later, a more determined assault reformatted the interpretable timsteamp sequences YYYYMMDDHHMMSS and YYYYMMDDHHMM with or without trailing E or N. off2004m05d01-2005m03d31BB.csv Returned to \BadData to join its original, and the eleven month fragments take its place. Later still, it became apparent that some data for Glenbrook overlapped over the fourteenth and fifteenth of December 2004. ALNT,GLN0331 ,GLN,0,14/12/2004,24, seems to be the last entry with real data, followed by spurious entries through 15/12/2004. ALNT,GLN0332 ,GLN,0,14/12/2004,25, seems to be the first entry with real data, preceeded by spurious entries from ALNT,GLN0332 ,GLN,0,14/12/2004,19. Since each record has data for one time only, there is no need for overlap, and the spurious records are now comments. By ukase, the putative ownership of some power stations is being messed about with, and the data files reflect the mess in their own way. MERI.TKA0111.TKA.0. becomes GENE.TKA0111.TKA.0. but only for hh 24-26 in 12/11/2010 and with all-zero values. These look spurious to me and are suppressed as being in conflict with non-zero data. For 3/12/2010 there appear splurts of zero and 9999 values for GENE.TKA0111.TKA.1. and GENE.TKB2201.TKB.1. for a few more times (there was no manifestation of TKB in November) while later in the file, normalish data for MERI.TKA0111.TKA.0. and MERI.TKB2201.TKB.0. carry on. So this double burp has been suppressed as spurious. The exchange is supposed to be effected from the first of January 2011, so these earlier dates indicate confusion. Or perhaps there will be a "virtual" change in putative ownership, involving a pre-agreed nominal buy/sell of the generation at one location with that at the other and perhaps not involving actual transmission. And a later buy/sell of the power stations. Or something. As there remains no specification describing these data, still less the changes, further guesswork is deferred until there appears to be a reasonable run of stability. Despite that date, the next event was for 24'th and 31'st of May. GENE data appear, looking zeroish, again followed by normalish data for MERI in so far as it can be guessed about. Then in June, no MERI data appear. The changeover?
